Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are exposed to intense heat and pressure. Metamorphic rocks can be formed from igneous, sedimentary, or even other metamorphic rocks. The rock formation Uluru, located in central Australia, is made up of a sedimentary rock called sandstone.

There are three kinds of rock: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks form when molten rock (magma or lava) cools and solidifies. Sedimentary rocks originate when particles settle out of water or air, or by precipitation of minerals from water. They accumulate in layers.
