M22-Wide vs M22 "Rock Crusher"
The M-22 gear teeth are cut at a noticeably lower angle (not quite at a straight angle as some people say). This lower angle of the teeth imparts greater strength to the gears, but it also increases the noise caused by the meshing of the gears. This higher level of noise is where the nickname "Rock crusher" originated.

The M22 transmission has a 20 degree helix angle on the gear set as opposed to a 45 degree angle found on the M20 and M21 and were made with a higher nickel alloy. The straighter angle was designed to produce less end loading of the gear train and less heat but created more noise, thus the nickname "Rock Crusher" was born.

The first time I heard the term "rock crusher" was in reference to the transmission in the 1967 L88 Corvette. Due to the low gear angle there is a fair amount of gear noise, really like a medium / heavy duty truck transmission. Probably because the 2.20 ratio creates lower forces compared to M20 2.52 and M22Z 2.98 and also the shallow helix angle compared to M20 distribute the forces more evenly into the case which makes it hold up fine. At least this applies to use case of street tires on the street. Slicks on tracks might turn out different.

This bumbed me out since I had previously read that this was an indication that it was a Saginaw not a Muncie. It does have a 7 bolt side cover. Doe this mean it's still an M22 but just manufactured at the Saginaw assembly plant or it's not an M22 "Rock Crusher Transmission". I am just learning !
